U.S.-Backed Initiative Launches in Kyrgyzstan to Combat Gender-Based Violence

A groundbreaking initiative to combat gender-based violence (GBV) in Kyrgyzstan has been launched with support from the U.S. Embassy Public Diplomacy Programs. The PowerTools program, developed by Footage Foundation, seeks to address the pressing issue of GBV through innovative storytelling methods, policy advocacy, and community mobilization.

The program, which will be implemented in partnership with the local civil society organization Kyrgyz El Agartuu Public Association, aims to raise awareness about GBV, advocate for stronger protections for survivors, and challenge harmful cultural beliefs. This collaborative effort underscores the importance of international cooperation in addressing global challenges and promoting social change.

PowerTools will begin with a comprehensive needs assessment to identify gaps in current GBV prevention efforts. The project will then deliver a series of training events, including a webinar on Footage's innovative GBV storytelling methods, an advocacy workshop focused on shifting cultural norms, and a Stakeholder Summit bringing together government officials and civil society organizations for policy-making dialogues.

Dr. Kristen Ali Eglinton, Executive Director and co-founder of Footage Foundation, emphasized the significance of addressing GBV in Kyrgyzstan, stating, "PowerTools focuses on enhancing policy dialogue and recommending actionable solutions. Needs assessment findings will be used to inform workshops to engage stakeholders from Kyrgyz civil society and government and equip them to foster long-term solutions based on compassion and creating a safer society for all."

The initiative aligns with U.S. foreign policy goals in Kyrgyzstan by promoting accountable governance, stability, and countering transnational threats such as human trafficking. It also coincides with the annual 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign, which runs from November 25 to December 10, highlighting the global nature of the fight against GBV.

Ajay Rao, Deputy Public Affairs Officer at the U.S. Embassy in the Kyrgyz Republic, expressed enthusiasm for the project, stating, "The U.S. Embassy is eager to support PowerTools as a way to contribute American perspectives and techniques to prevent GBV in the Kyrgyz Republic."

The PowerTools program represents a significant step forward in addressing GBV in Kyrgyzstan and serves as a model for international cooperation in tackling complex social issues. By bringing together local and international expertise, the initiative aims to create lasting change and foster a safer, more equitable society for all Kyrgyz citizens.
