Veteran Firearms Instructor Rick Billington Launches National Initiative to Promote Responsible Gun Ownership Through Book and Blog Series

At a time when national conversations surrounding firearms often focus heavily on politics while overlooking personal responsibility, veteran firearms instructor and author Rick Billington is launching a new educational initiative designed to shift the conversation toward what he believes matters most — responsible firearm ownership.

Billington, founder of Michigan Pistol Academy, has officially released his new book The Responsible Gun Owner, a practical guide focused on helping civilian firearm owners better understand the responsibilities that extend far beyond simply purchasing or carrying a firearm. In conjunction with the book launch, Billington is also introducing a six-part educational blog series titled The Responsible Gun Owner Series, which will begin publishing weekly beginning July 12, 2026.

The initiative is designed to challenge many of the misconceptions surrounding firearm ownership by focusing on the mental, legal, emotional, and decision-making responsibilities that accompany the right to own and carry a firearm.

"Far too much of the conversation around firearms focuses exclusively on the weapon itself," said Billington. "Very little attention is given to the responsibility, judgment, and decision-making that ultimately determine whether a firearm owner is truly prepared. Owning a firearm is a constitutional right, but responsible ownership requires education that extends far beyond learning how to shoot."

The newly released book The Responsible Gun Owner explores the deeper realities of civilian firearm ownership, emphasizing preparedness, personal accountability, emotional discipline, conflict avoidance, legal understanding, and decision-making under stress.

Building upon those same principles, the six-part educational blog series will address critical topics often overlooked within traditional firearms training programs. The series includes: Volume 1: Why Mindset Matters More Than Marksmanship; Volume 2: Why Understanding Self-Defense Law Is Non-Negotiable; Volume 3: Why Avoiding Conflict Is The Ultimate Self-Defense Skill; Volume 4: Home Defense Requires A Plan, Not A Firearm; Volume 5: Decision Making Under Stress Can Save Or Destroy Lives; and Volume 6: Emotional Control Is The Most Overlooked Skill In Firearms Training.

Billington, who brings decades of experience in law enforcement, conflict resolution, personal defense training, and civilian firearms education, believes many firearm owners unknowingly place themselves at unnecessary risk by focusing solely on technical shooting skills while failing to fully appreciate the broader responsibilities attached to carrying a weapon.

"The responsible gun owner should never view a firearm as the first answer to conflict," Billington explained. "The goal of proper training is not simply becoming proficient with a firearm. It is learning judgment, emotional discipline, conflict avoidance, and understanding when force should never become necessary in the first place."

The educational campaign is being hosted through Michigan Pistol Academy and is intended to provide both new and experienced firearm owners with a broader framework for responsible civilian firearm ownership that extends beyond conventional firearms instruction. The Responsible Gun Owner Series will be available through the Michigan Pistol Academy educational platform, with new installments released weekly throughout the summer.
