Veteran's New Book Offers Hope and Practical Steps for Lasting Freedom from Addiction

After nearly three decades of addiction, U.S. Army veteran Matthew Linehan found a new purpose: helping others break free from the chains that once held him. His debut book, Free Indeed: The Seven Keys to Unlock Your Freedom, released today, offers a candid look at his journey from despair to redemption and provides a biblical framework for those seeking lasting change.

Linehan's story is marked by early trauma; his father's suicide when Linehan was young plunged him into a spiral of grief and addiction that lasted into adulthood. It wasn't until January 2015, when he fully surrendered to Jesus Christ, that his life began to transform. Since then, he has dedicated himself to ministry, co-founding Men in Christ Global Ministries and serving in various pastoral roles, including a men's ministry director position in Katy, Texas.

"After nearly 30 years of addiction, I encountered Jesus Christ and was completely set free," Linehan said. "I wrote this book because I want people to know that no matter how long they have struggled, freedom is still possible. There is hope, and there is a way forward."

The book outlines seven principles that Linehan says were instrumental in his own recovery. Drawing from personal testimony and Scripture, he addresses issues such as addiction, shame, fear, and destructive patterns. The material was initially developed as a curriculum that he and his wife, Emily, taught at a large church in Houston, where they witnessed its impact on others battling similar issues.

"I believe this book is different because I lived it, walked it out, and came through the other side to talk about it," Linehan explained. "These principles are not theories to me. They are biblical truths that transformed my life and became the foundation of the message God has called me to share."

The book is aimed not only at those struggling with addiction but also at families, ministry leaders, and caregivers who support them. Linehan's hope is that readers will find encouragement in knowing that no one is beyond the reach of grace. "If readers take away only one thing from this book, I want it to be hope," he said. "Jesus offers abundant new life to everyone who is willing to surrender. Freedom is not reserved for a select few, and no one is too broken, too ashamed, or too far gone to experience the transforming power of God's grace."

Writing the book was a challenge for Linehan, who lives with ADHD and had to develop strategies to stay focused. He began seriously working on the project around 2020, after years of encouragement from friends and family. The result is a practical guide that combines personal narrative with discipleship principles, grounded in the belief that transformation is possible for anyone.

Linehan's ministry continues to expand. He currently lives in Taipei, Taiwan, with his wife and daughter, while traveling regularly to Houston and ministering internationally. His work with Men in Christ Global Ministries focuses on helping men grow spiritually and develop authentic fellowship. He is also a graduate of the Lakewood Church Pastoral Care Internship.
