A recent webinar hosted by Footage Foundation and El-Agartuu highlighted the critical role of storytelling and compassion in preventing violence against women, based on findings from a comprehensive needs assessment in Kyrgyzstan.

The collaborative efforts of Footage Foundation and El-Agartuu have brought to light the pressing issue of violence against women in Kyrgyzstan through a webinar titled 'Using Innovative Methods in the Prevention of Violence Against Women.' This event, part of a series, showcased the importance of storytelling, compassion, and participatory methods in addressing and preventing violence. The discussion was grounded in the findings of a needs assessment conducted from December 2024 to January 2025, engaging 108 participants including survivors, NGO staff, and government employees.
One of the stark revelations from the research was that 73% of violence victims suffer from poor mental health, underscoring the urgent need for counseling services. The assessment also identified several critical needs: enhanced training for government staff, better collaboration among NGOs, awareness of cultural barriers, improved coordination across services, and more support for survivors in terms of safe housing and income generation. These findings not only highlight the gaps in current systems but also pave the way for actionable solutions to combat violence against women.
Dr. Kristen Ali Eglinton of Footage Foundation emphasized the opportunity to shift societal norms by investing in awareness, professional capacity building, and creating trust-filled spaces. Similarly, Nurzhan Tulegabylova from El-Agartuu pointed out the necessity of community education and efforts to change harmful norms, reflecting broader patterns across Central Asia. This initiative represents a significant step forward in the fight against gender-based violence, offering a model for compassionate, evidence-based interventions that could inspire similar efforts worldwide.
