Zillow's new AI-powered Virtual Staging feature allows home shoppers to visualize properties in different design styles, addressing the emotional challenges of home buying and providing agents with competitive marketing tools.

Zillow Launches AI-Powered Virtual Staging Feature to Enhance Home Shopping Experience

Zillow has launched Virtual Staging, an AI-powered feature integrated directly into Zillow Showcase, the company's premium listing experience. This innovation enables home shoppers viewing listing photos to tap a button, select from curated design styles, and see select rooms fully staged in real time. Amanda Pendleton, Zillow's home trends expert, emphasized that buying a home is an emotional decision as much as a financial one, noting that many buyers overlook potential homes because they cannot visualize beyond existing furniture or design choices.

The feature addresses a common challenge where buyers struggle to picture themselves in a home, particularly when it is empty or styled differently from their preferences. On Showcase listings, a Virtual Staging icon appears on select featured room photos, allowing users to choose from styles including modern, Scandinavian, industrial, midcentury, luxury, coastal, and farmhouse. AI then restyles the space, whether the room is empty or already furnished. Shoppers can refresh the room in the same style for new furniture arrangements or remove furniture entirely to see the home as a blank slate.

For agents and sellers, Virtual Staging serves as a high-impact tool to make listings stand out in competitive markets. It encourages exploration by giving buyers additional reasons to interact with listings and meets growing demand for interactive media. According to Zillow's 2024 Consumer Housing Trends Report, 71% of sellers are more likely to hire an agent who uses interactive media such as virtual tours or floor plans. When paired with Showcase, the impact is amplified; agents using Showcase on most listings win 30% more listings than non-Showcase agents, and Showcase listings sell for $7,000 more on average.

This feature represents the first major integration of technology from Virtual Staging AI (VSAI), following Zillow's acquisition of the company in October 2024. Josh Weisberg, senior vice president of AI at Zillow, stated that Virtual Staging applies computer vision AI to restyle listing photos in real time, helping shoppers see a home's potential and providing agents with a time-saving tool to stand out. The same AI capability has been available to real estate photographers and media companies through Aryeo since March at no extra cost to subscribers, facilitating virtual staging for photography professionals.

By embedding this technology directly into Showcase, Zillow introduces a consumer-facing, interactive staging experience that makes home shopping more immersive and personal. This integration aligns with Zillow's broader AI vision to personalize experiences for buyers and sellers, make processes effortless for agents, and fully integrate AI into Showcase. Virtual Staging demonstrates how AI in real estate delivers tangible benefits, moving beyond hype to provide visual results that enhance shopping for buyers and simplify marketing for agents, ultimately advancing the future of home shopping.
