Rich Sena, a dedicated trustee for Boerne ISD School Board shared his re-election campaign insights in a recent episode of Vote Like a Texan with Justin McKenzie. Sena, a passionate advocate for public education and a first-generation American, emphasizes his commitment to Boerne’s 11,200 students and continued fiscal stewardship amidst rapid community growth.

Commitment to Service and Educational Excellence
Sena, who has served for multiple terms and worked with three superintendents, highlights his institutional knowledge and dedication to the district.

“It has been the honor of a lifetime to serve our community as a trustee,” Sena stated. “I feel that I have 11,200 children… and no amount of time dedicated to this volunteer position is adequate to support them in achieving their dreams.”

Boerne ISD is an A-rated district, one of only 31 out of over 1200 in Texas to consistently achieve this rating, and the only one in the San Antonio area with more than 1,000 students. This excellence is attributed to community support, strong governance, and a focus on developing teaching staff.

Innovative Programs & Fiscal Responsibility
Under Sena’s tenure, Boerne ISD has implemented the P-TECH (Pathways in Technology Early College High School) program, allowing students to graduate high school with an associate’s degree, saving families thousands in college costs.

“Our kids can get these associate’s degrees… they’re halfway through the college experience, saving them and their family thousands of dollars,” Sena explained.

The district has also achieved significant financial savings through proactive bond refinancing.

“We paid off the 99 bond… the 02 bond… and we refinanced at a lower rate,” Sena detailed, noting over $85 million in taxpayer savings through early debt payoff and interest reductions. The 2022 bond projects have come in under budget, further demonstrating fiscal prudence.

Advocating for Teachers and Local Control
Sena actively advocates for teachers, having testified in Austin for retention allotments and backing local initiatives for competitive wages. He also championed the successful fight to eliminate the Robin Hood tax, which previously diverted over $120 million from Boerne ISD to the state. Sena affirms that now local tax dollars will stay within the community and ensures efficient use of funds despite receiving $3,000 less per student than the state average.

Sena anticipates modest, manageable growth for Boerne ISD, allowing for integration of newcomers while preserving the district’s unique culture. Continued focus will be on Career and Technical Education (CTE), aiming to expand academic options and maintain a 95% College, Career, Military Ready (CCMR) rate, well above the state average.
